THE SOUTHERN FISHING REPORT
by Ken Sturdivant

January 1, 2009

LAKE WEISS IS 5.01 FEET BELOW FULL POOL STAINED AND 46 DEGREES

Bass fishing is fair and fish are deep on main lake points and river channel ledges. Jigs and Carolina rigged plastics are you best bet for winter time bass on Weiss Lake. Get a spoon out on the old river ledges also.

Striper fishing is fair and the stripers have moved back to the main lake on the old river channel ledges. A live shad down lined on a # 2 treble hook with a 3/4 ounce weight at 8-10 feet deep on the river ledges of the Coosa River and the Chattooga River is the preferred method. The power house lake and the canal are producing some stripers when they are generating power at the Weiss dam, look for the fish on points and humps that create a current break in 10-20 feet of water.

Crappie fishing is fair and the fish are on their winter time pattern in the upper Coosa river from Cowan Creek to Poole's Ferry. The fish are holding in12-15 feet of water, bumping bottom with minnows and Jiffy Jigs is the best way to fill your limit on these winter time Weiss Lake slabs. Look for log jams and any structure that makes a current break. Some fish are being caught trolling 1/32 ounce jigs in the coves of the upper Coosa River.
